Know Yourself An Explanation of the Oneness of Being Ibn Arabi Awhad aldin Balyani Cecilia Twinch 9780904975659 Books Reviews
This book is a new, clearer, and more modern translation of "Whoso Knoweth Himself, from the Treatise on Being (Risale-t-ul-wujudiyyah)" ascribed to Ibn Arabi and certainly created under his spiritual influence, through the pen of Awhad al-din Balyani. The previous translation, by T.H. Weir, from a manuscript in Edinburgh, was published by Beshara Publications in 1976. Cecilia's new translation is in more modern English and clearly written as is the original, which is a very direct text in the line of Ibn Arabi.
To get the flavour of this "directness", it needs to be experienced and tasted, even if briefly..."No sent prophet, nor perfect saint nor angel brought close knows Him. His prophet is He; His Messenger is He; His message is He and His word is He. He sent Himself, through Himself, from Himself to Himself; there is no intermediary or means other than He. There is no difference between the Sender, that which is sent and the one to whom it is sent. The very existence of the letters of the prophetic message is His existence. There is no other who could cease to be, or have a name or be named.
Because of this, the Prophet (may God bless him and give him peace) said, "He who knows himself, knows his Lord". He also said, "I knew my Lord through my Lord". What the Prophet meant by this, is that you are not you but you are He and there is no you; and it is not that He enters into you or comes out of you, or that you enter into Him or come out of Him. He did not mean that you have being and you are qualified by this or that attribute. What he meant was that you never were and that you never will be, whether through yourself, or through Him, or in Him or with Him. You have neither ceased to be nor are you existent. You are Him and He is you, without any of these imperfections. If you know your existence in this way, then you know God; and if not, then not!".
The book is something most precious, to be kept close and read and re-read until light dawns...
Know Yourself deserves to be included in every spiritual seeker’s and traveler’s library, especially in a time when religion and spirituality have become so removed from the daily life of the human collectivity. Those interested in Sufi psychology, including perennial psychology, will also find this volume to be important. In our challenging age, having good books like this one becomes indispensable. It goes without saying that books alone cannot take the place of a formal spiritual affiliation nor can they be a substitute for spiritual guidance, as it is all-too-easy to lose one’s way on the Path. Yet books can serve an important role in the spiritual life and can certainly be a tremendous support. This sublime and slender volume, while originating within the Islamic tradition and its inner dimension of Sufism, contains keys that are found universally across all of the sapiential traditions. In essence, it is a condensed version of the essential truths found within the perennial philosophy, the heart of all religions. We are grateful for this revised translation of this remarkable book attributed to Ibn ‘Arabi/Balyani which has been made available once again to readers in the West.

A great read.
I can't believe I read almost the entire book in one sitting. I had to stop to reflect on what I had read. This book is so in tune with learning to get in touch with your true inner you. Very dense book. Easy read, but very meaty. This is NOT a fluff book.
read it and be moved
A good, ancient description of nonduality. But far too expensive for just a few pages of text. Better to stick with Rupert Spira, Mooji, or other nonduality teachers in my opinion. You can read tons of their helpful teachings for free on YouTube or attend their satsangs.
A clear, and beautifully translated non dual masterpiece!
Oh wow, what to say, the book is the TRUTH! All caps! Straight to the heart. Rupert Spira shares from this book often and it melts the heart.
