In life, devils exist in the forms of men. For Depression-Era detective Frank Palmer, the prominent radio host murdered in his own home is more than just another unsolved case. With evidence implicating two of the most powerful crime families in the city, Palmer delves further into the murder investigation, finding himself in the middle of a mob war for control of the void left by the recently departed kingpin. From alleyway shootouts to rooftop chases, Palmer becomes the next target, and unlikely assistance comes in the form of a mysterious urban legend that Palmer has encountered once before. It's a good trip to the bad old days with a detective, mystery, murder, mobsters, gun fights, car chases, a femme fatale and streets haunted by a mysterious urban legend. What's not to love?
The Haunted Streets The Vacant Exordium Wyatt Hamby Books
I'll have to admit I don't read very many books. In fact, I can't remember the last one. Before I started The Haunted Streets, I wasn't sure I would finish it. But by the 3rd chapter I was pleasantly hooked. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the way the author introduced each one and the steady progression of the characters relationship with each other. Each chapter was assembled in a way that kept me coming back for more. It is clear that Mr. Hamby did extensive research in the ways that people spoke and acted back in the '30s. His vivid detailed descriptions made me think I was right there looking over the characters shoulder. This book was easy to read and follow and I will recommend it to my friends and look forward to Mr. Hamby's next work of art.Product details

The Haunted Streets The Vacant Exordium Wyatt Hamby Books Reviews
Great read, I was hooked from the beginning. I usually read a book every day or so, but I was so drawn into the story I finished this one the same day! I can't wait for more!!
I love a good detective mystery. Most of my reading in this genre has revolved around more contemporary detectives. But I have to admit, this one grabbed me early and kept me reading. It reminds me of a Humphrey Bogart movie - he would have been great as Detective Palmer. I am ready for some more of Mr. Hamby's novels.
Every image in my head that this book triggered was in black and white. Set in the 1930's it reminded me of all the films and books of that gangster era. The dialogue is spot on for the period and the genre. The story line is engaging with a strong cast of characters. If you are of a certain age like me you will recognise the language used; but younger readers may need to check a dictionary for a few references. 'One new word every day is the high road to success' a teacher of mine once said - so Mr Hamby will increase your vocabulary. If you want to take a step back in time to when a Gatt spat lead rather than dealt with trade & tariffs, then this is just the book for you..
I'm often contacted by authors to review books. Wyatt Hamby contacted me and offered a free copy of The Haunted Streets for review.
I read a lot of mystery novels, and found The HauntedStreetecaptivating and an enjoyable read. It's set in the late 1930's at the height of the Depression. Frank Palmer, a detective that has dubious connections to gangland figures is the main character.
This book is full of shoot outs, car chases and surprises from a masked figure known as Mortuary. I don't want to give away the plot, but this is a very interesting read and I can recommend it with confidence. If you're a mystery fan, read The Haunted Streets.
Thanks NetGalley for a copy for an honest review.
Set in the 1930's where speakeasies, tough gangsters & tough cops ruled the day, Detective Frank Palmer stands an example of integrity against the rising crime on the streets. Called to the home of radio host Maxwell Morgan, it appears to be a routine murder investigation; but Palmer knows with organized crime so readily in the mix it will be nothing but routine.
Loved the setting for this novel. While it doesn't have the stylized eloquence of the Godfather; or the edge of a Raymond Chandler novel, it doesn't come off as cartoonish either. The descriptions & vernacular are spot on for the time period, the entire cast of characters each have a unique, well-constructed voice; & the plot is engaging & tightly woven, making the world easily visualized.
I was born decades after the golden age of radio; but have always loved listening to those programs. This book reminded me of all those great serials. I found the book to be solid entertainment & would, just like listeners tuned in every week for the next radio broadcast, revisit this world again.
I loved this book and can't wait for the next book by this author.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Haunted Streets. I was looking for something new and different to read, and this is exactly that! There's never a dull moment! The author does an amazing job transporting you to the 1930's and fully immersing you into the world of cops, gangsters and vigilante heroes. I am very much looking forward to reading more by author Wyatt Hamby!
