What lies beneath the page? Between the lines, within the words and the sentences and the story? Ida Cremchanskivich, a middle aged women who loves the piano, is lost in flight as she tries to make her way home from vacation. Through one another, these four characters intertwine and travel the world as they begin to understand themselves, their stories, and life itself.

This is a very creative, original, imaginative and engaging book. I really enjoyed the image of the “literal” metaphor with punctuation marks at the top of a mountain. The protagonist and the antagonist race and battle their way up to the top in order to secure their punctuation marks-which represent their vision of what life, should be. The book is written through the eyes of many characters, but throughout is a sense that the writer is on a philosophical journey to explore the meaning of life. Lola is a very smart and witty writer with a wisdom and knowledge way beyond her youth. So order “The Crack”, pick up some delicious sushi and join the ride, you will not be disappointed.Product details

The Crack Lola Lafia 9781494453282 Books Reviews
I love this book. It is AMAZING and all I can do is praise it. I completely got lost in the book and fell in love with these characters; and the best part? It is written by a 13 year old! She has such a great future in writing and I can't wait to read more of her books. This is a must buy and read for kids and even adults.
Our story isn't always just our story. We are not the center of the universe, although we may be the center of our universe. We should not, however, forget that our story is only a part of a much larger collection of stories and other universes.
This is several tales that is also one tale written by the young Lola Lafia. It is a testament to creativity. This is a frame narrative reframed, then re-imagined, and then reframed again. As the characters evolve and develop their own idiosyncrasies they become increasingly aware of the characters-whom-their-reading/creating's idiosyncrasies as well. They read, they write, they eat, and they fight!
This story is not about individuals. This is a beautifully woven tale where individuals learn that theirs is an important story, but not the only story. This novel will remind you of the importance of understanding yourself and others. I highly recommend you read it.
Read it to yourself.
Read it to others.
Read it for yourself.
Read it for others.
And then read it again. I know I will.
Lola Lafia and her endearing characters tackle life’s riddles in this colorful and exquisitely-written debut novel, "The Crack." You will encounter Mr. Bombompsky in his black suit with yellow hexagonal buttons who frequents his favorite Japanese restaurant every Tuesday . . . and Ida Cremchanskivich who flying to Berlin, composes loops of music in her head while drowning out the whale of a sound – a baby’s scream – with wool socks strategically placed over her headphones. Lola’s writing speaks to the senses and is brimming with observations that are gorgeous in their specificity, from the smells of hot coffee to the larger world as seen through the eyes of Ida who from the vantage of a plane considers “ . . . the gentle roll of the mountains; they were the skin of a body; the clothes of the earth.”
"The Crack" is sure to transport the reader back, regardless of age, to that time when first inklings of consciousness were discovered and the seedlings of questions planted – the what’s and why’s of life. Dare yourself to find within its pages truths in waiting, truths for the taking. I love this kernel of wisdom “You are one center, but not the center. Everyone of us is the center of the universe. But the mistake is to think, ‘I am the only center.’ ” The Crack is an invitation to peel back the layers. Hats off to Lola Lafia who picked up the pen to solidly plant a question mark on the Mountain of Life for us to ponder individually and together.
The Crack was very interesting because there were multiple stories going on at once. One was about Mr Bombompsky doing his work, having his job. The other one is Lee Cot and Sir E Vil trying to battle to get their punctuation marks to the top of the Mountain of Life. And the third story was about Ida C who was having a very long detour from her flight to go home.
I love the battles between Lee Cot and Sir E Vil because there was a lot of storms and fighting ,and it was really good. I loved the treats that Mr. Bombopbsky had at his party with everyone because Saki Motto brought the best desert which was fried green tea ice cream and I could have eaten the book then. I really liked Willy from Ida’s story because he always talks in a funny voice, and he’s so jolly all the time.
I liked how it was a story within a story within a story because it all started out with Emil writing about Mr. Bombompsky. And then Mr. B is writing a book and Ida is reading it, and it all comes together with the stories.
I learned that life keeps on changing every ten years because that’s when new punctuation marks are put on top of the Mountain of Life.
I want to read the next book, The Crack 2. Lola, have you started writing it yet?
A wonderful novel , A promising writer. A well crafted and swift read I am looking forward to the next one!!!
Lola Lafia writes with an insight, warmth and understanding of the human condition that belies her age of only 13. Her heartfelt story about the process of story telling, being and embracing the mystery of life astonished me. I read this over the course of several days - even though I could have gotten through it in an afternoon - so that I could savor all the wonderful asides and detours. This book will inspire you to go out and embrace life. Get it. Read it. Live it.
I really liked the book, especially the multiple levels of characters reading and writing about each other. I was just waiting for Lee Cot to read about Ida to make the circle complete (just kidding). The multiple perspectives and the questions of what is reality are great.
I particularly like the passage on p. 44 about the dead moments. I often think about all the moments that existed for all of history, almost all of them lost without any memory in anyone's mind. The whole book is really good. It's a story within a story within a story. A promising beginning for this young author!
